Melody

I was in the bathroom when my doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it!” I heard Lyric yell from the living room.

She had helped me hobble home to get a few more of my things so I could have them at Jazz’s house during my brief recovery because I didn’t want to go back and forth.

While getting a few clothes together, my bladder got the best of me. Lyric helped me to the bathroom, and I sat there for a couple of minutes playing a word game on my phone.

Before I could think to tell her to wait, I heard her open the door and say, “Hello.”

After that, I could hear her and a male’s voice. The conversation was muffled, and it made my nerves bad.

“Lyric, who is it?” I yelled while reaching for the toilet tissue.

When she didn’t immediately respond, my anxiety grew. Fearing the worst, like her getting kidnapped right from my front door, I wiped as fast as I could and hobbled out of the bathroom, almost forgetting to flush the damn toilet.

“Lyric!” I called out as I limped quickly to my living room. I paused when I saw who she was talking to. “Uncle Arnie!”

He had been engrossed in whatever he and Lyric were talking about, but he looked up at me as I approached them.

“Hey, Chipmunk,” he said, calling me by the nickname he had given me as a little girl. He only used it when he was trying to butter me up, and he looked like he’d been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

“Uh-huh,” I replied, looking at him.

Then I looked at Lyric. She looked like she’d been caught with her hand in the same cookie jar as my uncle.

“What are you two doing?” I asked my uncle.

“Nothing,” he answered with an innocence that I wasn’t ready to trust. “We were just reintroducing ourselves.”

“Uh-huh,” I repeated, then turned my attention to Lyric. “I have a purple bag in the top of my closet,” I began. “Can you get it and put those clothes that I have on the bed in it? After you do that, will you go in my bathroom and grab some bath soap, a couple of lotions, and my cocoa butter? Put it all in the bag, too.”

“Okay,” she replied before walking off to do as I had asked.

I watched as she glanced back at my uncle before going into my room.

Yeah, they’d done more than just said hello.

I looked at him. “I gotta wash my hands,” I informed him before slowly limping to my kitchen. I turned on the hot water and waited for it to warm up. “So, what really just happened?”

“I was coming to check on you since your mother said you got hurt,” he explained.

“Thank you,” I replied. “I’m in pain, but I’m fine. But that’s not what I meant, and you know it. What did you say to Lyric?”

He took a deep breath. “I just asked her if she knew who I was.”

“And what did she say?” I demanded with my hand on my hip.
